Turquoise Days - Grey Skies (The Rest) (2006)

This will be my last post before X-mas, and perhaps before the new year, so happy holidays to all and happy new year if I don't report until then!

So, as many of you know, the wonderful label Minimal Wave recently released a re-issue LP for Turquoise Days (which I quickly bought, and you should too, because it sounds SO good). However, it does not cover everything. There is still some material from this great band to be had, which is contained on a quite nice, although scarce, CD/DVD package. For now, I'm just going to upload the extra tracks you can't get on the LP (see track listing below).

There's a DVD section with some footage and extras, including the "Grey Skies" video and interview, some slideshow photos, and 4 sound check videos from a performance at Corbiere Pavilion. I may post that later if I ever get around to making a proper rip of it.

For now, though, here's "the rest". Enjoy!

Track List:

01 - Grey Skies (Single '84)
02 - Tonight **
03 - Feed The Flame **
04 - Scattering Seeds
05 - Hide
06 - Turning Blue **
07 - Endlessly **
08 - European Mind
09 - Parafoil
10 - Forget **
11 - Blurred (demo)
12 - French Film Backwards
13 - Alternative Strategies
14 - Grey Skies (demo) **
15 - Blurred (single b-side)

** these tracks are included in the link below

P.S. Please buy the LP from Minimal Wave and support this great artist/label!

Various Artists - Blush On Black (1984)

Here's an almost unknown record featuring a nice collection of artists. Probably the most well-known song from this one would be Jullan's "Imaginary Doll", but the version here is (as far as I know) unique to this record, and the main reason I ripped this one. I think it's the best version of the song that exists. Jullan are quite the nice little duo, from Japan. More info and listens over at Saltyka's blog.

The rest of this record features a few nice synthy tracks, most of which sound pretty pop, but a nice listen all the same. Honorable mention to Zaine Griff and Fear Of The Dark. Enjoy!

Track List:

A1 - Pleasure In Pink - Run
A2 - Jullan - Imaginary Doll
A3 - Zaine Griff - Mental Pictures
A4 - Stranger Than Fiction - One Life
A5 - Duffo - And So It Rains
A6 - Fear Of The Dark - Love That Burns
B1 - Zaine Griff - Turn Out The Light
B2 - Pleasure In Pink - Turn To Fall
B3 - Duffo - I Want To Be The Pilot
B4 - Listen - Here Come The Rats
B5 - La La Bam Bam - Is It...?
B6 - Stranger Than Fiction - Breaking The Bond

Faded Image - Modern (1984)

So after my request for Move's self-titled 12" was finally filled by Mr. Frankie Teardrop with the help of Pieter @ Wierd Records, I decided to post up another gem from Italy. Really nice synth wave 12" that I think deserves some recognition. On the same label that would release XNO's Angel 12", 3 years later. Worth checking out. Enjoy.

Track List:

A1 - Instanity
A2 - A-Totale
B1 - Strumentale
B2 - Sleeping City
B3 - Il Nuovo Tempo

Various Artists - Burning The Midnight Sun (1984)

Here's a nice compilation of Norwegian tracks that I decided to rip this afternoon, because... well, I've got nothing better to do. Quite a few recognizable names, with top tracks from each. Favorites here would be Svart Klovn, Blue Mathue, and De Press... who I believe are still active to this day. Plenty of good listens here, mostly on the A-side. Enjoy.

Track List:

A1 - Fra Lippo Lippi - A Small Mercy
A2 - Svart Klovn - Knust Knekt
A3 - Holy Toy - Wojtek
A4 - Blue Mathue - In Our Dream
A5 - De Press - Total Corruption

Vision Factory - Bird From Fez (1990)

Nice and somewhat weird gatefold 7" from Germany, hot off the needle. If you're a fan of Lisfrank type vocals (like I am), you'll probably like these. The music is a bit more strange and experimental, but still quite good. Enjoy.

Track List:

A - Bird From Fez
B - Tremendous Mates

Jours Etranges - Illusions Perdues (1986)

Quite rare synthpop 7" out of France. You won't see this one laying around the local shops, heh heh (but if you do... feel free to send it to me ;P). Anyway, really nice title track with great emotion in the chorus, followed by a rather dark and sinister-sounding instrumental on the flip side. Definitely check this one out.

A - Illusions Perdues
B - Interieur

New Scientists - The Storm (1986) +

Great synthpop 12" out of Germany, featuring 2 tracks from the band's LP, as well as the track "Side By Side", which can only be found on this record.

+ The LP rip can be found kicking about, but with the file names & tags mixed up, so I uploaded an organized version here.

Track List:

A1 - What Will The Future Bring
A2 - Tell Me When Your Heart Beats
A3 - The Storm
A4 - Southafrica **
B1 - Shame On You **
B2 - Atomic War **
B3 - Why Don't You Stay
B4 - Watch Out
B5 - I Miss You

** really love these

+ The members have been involved in several other projects, including the band Cunning Toy in 1987. I have uploaded that record here. Uwe Kallenbach went on to join the group, Syntec. Rene Bachmann is a member of the band Oomph! and is now known as "Flux".

B1 - Side By Side
B2 - Watch Out

Aaah...! - Aaah...! (1982)

Nice minimal synth 7" out of the UK. The band's first of two 7" releases, this one's my favorite of the bunch, and neither are very easy to find. Both sides of this one are good. Enjoy!

Track List:

A - Slip Away
B - Duty Calls

Wrinklemuzik - A Move To The Right (1981)

Ultra-rare minimal synth 7" out of the US, of which I know very little about. I believe it's the only release by the artist. This one really has the familiar sound of scarcity that we crave so much. The title track kicks things off nicely, with waves of trippy analog synthesizers and haunting vocal textures. What follows are two icey instrumentals, the first of which is more akin to track one, the last of which is quite strange and spacey... definitely worth checking out! Enjoy!

A1 - A Move To The Right
A2 - Bangkok
B1 - Rein

Car Crash Set - Another Day (1986)

Here's the final 12" released by the very well-known and Car Crash Set, an amazing band that has had a few other tracks posted on various blogs, and released a great LP on Anna Logue records in 2008 (worth buying!). This record keeps in line with the rest of their releases, a collection of outstanding wave tracks that perfectly blend melodic synthesizer with cold guitar. Oh, did I mention it's produced by the legendary John Fryer? I'm fairly certain this hasn't been posted elsewhere, so enjoy this rare gem :-)

Track List:

A1 - Another Day (Extended Mix)
A2 - Talk To Me
B1 - The More You Win
B2 - East To West

Download -- had some issues with the tracks so I'm removing the link for now. Sorry all.

Calling Hearts - Return To Base (1981)

Outstanding minimal synth 7" from the UK. I don't know much about the bands discography, other than the fact that they have another 7" titled "Haunted House" (anyone have mp3s?), and the b-side of this 7" can be found on "East Of Croydon " compilation over at Mutant Sounds. Then there's a loose track I've been able to find called "Cosmology", but I cannot find any information about it. I hope someone out there knows something. It's an outstanding song, perhaps my favorite of theirs... Enjoy!

Track List:

A - Return To Base
B - In The Jungle

Download

P.S. They have another 7" called "Haunted House" that I ripped here if anyone is curious, but I warn you -- it's pretty crap, nowhere near as good as the one above.

Black Letter Day - The Screaming (1987)

Great & rare synth wave 7" out of Sweden on Platina Records, the same label as my very first post here, as well as another 7" that I would really like to get the b-side track of... that being The Gift's "In A Far Away Kingdom". The track is called "Johnny", anyone out there have it? Anyway, both Black Letter Day tracks are quite good, really gloomy synth wave on the title track, and a nice upbeat synthpop track on the b-side. Enjoy!

Track List:

A - The Screaming
B - So Long

Session - Unit The Forces (1986)

Absolutely brilliant and highly sought after synthpop 7" out of Sweden. The B-side "Enemy" is well-circulated from various comps, but the title track is quite elusive. Well, until now. It goes without saying that if you're hoping to buy this one (if it ever surfaces), it isn't going to come cheap. Hope you enjoy these as much as I do.

Ashley Morance - Over The Wall (1982)

Rather unknown US synth wave 7". Fairly certain this is the only release/work by this artist other than playing keys for an obscure punk band called Mourning Noise in 1983, and some other, more recent work under the name "Mike Morance". Not much info beyond that, both tracks are pretty good here. Enjoy!

Kofe - Discography (84-86)

Finding information on this group was far from easy, as most of it is in Russian, but with a little help from Google translate and my friend zomg, I've gathered a fair amount of info:
Kofe (Кофе), or "Coffee", was formed in 1983 by Edward Nesterenko, Alexander Senin, Stanislaus Tishkov and Gregory Kobeshavidze and almost immediately with the participation of then-novice sound engineer Alexei Cherry recorded his debut album, "Ballet." The band played "new wave", used the texts in the spirit of neo-romanticism that then rock scene was a bit unusual. In 1985, from "Coffee" leaves Kobeshavidze, but joined Igor Kopylov and Igor Petrov - former bassist and guitarist for "TV". The new composition of the group entered into a rock club, gave several successful concerts in the Palace of Youth, and even falling on the "Musical Ring", recorded their second album "Balance". On the fourth rock festival, the group was not related, the rock community remained hostile - antisocial texts and sound too trendy "coffee" and scare away the critics and parties, while at the same time the audience. In 1987, the group ceased to exist.

For a more detailed description, go here.

Now, I want to focus on "Balans" because it is by far the better of the two. In fact, I'm only posting the first album for those who might be interested, but as fair warning it's not even comparable to the great sound of "Balans". The entire album is a synth wave gem, just check out "Put To Zero" and the last/title track. Great choruses and melodies. Enjoy!

Max & Intro - We Design The Future (1985)

This is a somewhat unknown 7" from Yugoslavia, and I'm fairly certain it's the only release by the group (but I'd love to be wrong). I am also going to include three Max & Intro demos (2 from the 7", and 1 other), because they're great. I actually like the "Beogradska Devojka" demo better than the 7" version, and "Los De Jan" demo is great too. Check them out!

Phantom Limb - Dance Of The Guilty (1982)

This mini-LP is from the Netherlands on "Sublabel" which is a division of Torso records, and is a post-punk / wave gem. The sound on this record is very much ahead of its time. There are parts of it where I'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference between a modern indie rock/post-punk band. A bit more guitar-based upload this time, after all that synth I've been posting. Enjoy!

Supportez Les Mineurs - To Whom It May Belong (1988)

Had to rip this one -- first because I absolutely love it, but also because it seems to be fairly unknown. I hope that will now change. This LP comes from Germany and, unless I'm mistaken, is the only release by this great band. This record shows a masterful command of instrumentation, with brilliant beats and basslines, melodic male & female vocals, all backed with haunting synths that set the mood of each song perfectly. Pretty great all the way through, hard not to love this one. Last track is a masterpiece. See for yourself. ;-)

Track List:

A1 - No More Than A Word

Page - Dansande Man (1983)

A classic synthpop 7" out of Sweden, the band's first release. How bout that album art, eh? The title track is featured on the Retronics compilation CD, which you can get here, if you don't already have it. Much cleaner version of the song, I'm sure, and quite a few gems to be heard there as well. In any case, enjoy!

Warm Dark Pocket - Warm Dark Pocket (1986)

Warm Dark Pocket was a project of Robb Earls and Marilyn Blair which formed not too long after Earls' previous (and more well-known) band, Factual. One of the few DIY wave bands from Nashville, Tennessee. Great intimate echoey male and female vox with uptempo rhythms and cold backgrounded guitars and choral synth textures.

From the insert:

"Warm Dark Pocket brings music back to the basics of well defined beat charged with emotion and atmosphere." -Robb Earls

"Warm Dark Pocket is one of the wild mysteries of the universe -- one with solid definition yet open and expansive." -Marilyn Blair

Enjoy!

Various Artists - 13 (Lively Art) (1990)

Great compilation LP here, nice mix of artists and styles. Teepee (what an unfortunate name) starts things off with a surprisingly great track, it's a shame we never heard more from this band. What follows is a group of fantastic bands that many of you are already familiar with, I'm sure. The Asylum Party track was exclusive to this release (until being re-released in 2006) and is, in my opinion, one of their best. Also featured here is a 5 minute version of Little Nemo's classic "City Lights", always a fine choice. Be sure to catch the Collection d'Arnell Andrea track... hauntingly beautiful darkwave. Enjoy!

Track List:

A1 - Teepee - Tribes Are Meeting
A2 - Asylum Party - Love Or Madness

The Quarks - Mechanical (1981)

UPDATE (5/23/16): Martin from the band has contacted me letting me know he's included other works from the period on bandcamp, including his other great project "President President".

Here's a little gem from the UK that doesn't get very much attention. A bit commercial sounding, but not at all in a bad way. I could only rip the 7", as I don't own the 12", but I do have an mp3 of that version, which is definitely worth grabbing (I'll post it below).

Track List:

Mittageisen - Automaten (1985)

After the first Art Interface post, I had a request for the Wardance video. So, thanks to the generosity of AI's Douglas Vasey, I've received the video as well as a CD-R containing further works by the band. Still A House - Untitled Cassette (1986)

This is an ultra obscure, demo cassette for which I can find no information whatsoever beyond the year and country (UK). If there's anyone out there who can shed some light -- would love to hear from you. I've done my best to clean up the sound, but it's still pretty raw, as you'll see. Worth checking this one out, though. It's got that dark synth flavor we all know and love. Enjoy!

Infam - I Won't Loose My Faith (1990)

Infam are a German synthpop band that first formed in 1985, but did not release a single until this one, in 1990. Infam continues to release music to this day. There is definitely similar styling to early 90s synthpop bands like Beborn Beton, And One, De/Vision, etc (which may or may not sit well with you)... certainly in the title track... but it's the B-side that I really like from this one. It could just be me, but I really hear a similarity to the Eleven Pond vocalist here. Anyway, Enjoy!

Organized Pleasure - Ah! (1981)

Pretty rare 7" out of Belgium. Admittedly, I don't think too much of the b-side, but "Ah!" is a nice little upbeat piece of wave for you to enjoy. Vocals sometimes remind me of Parade Ground a bit. Check it.

This is an amazing 7" out of France that will grab you in the first few seconds. Really compelling, dark, and beautiful synths with female vocals. These are existing mp3s I've had sitting around, and the quality is good on the A-side (which is the better track) and decent on the B-side, but when I'm feeling a bit less lazy I'll re-post a better rip. Ladomir - Discography (87-09)

Ladomir are a new wave / post-punk / synthwave band which originally formed in Helsingborg, Sweden in 1984. The band moved to Gothenburg in 1985, played a lot of gigs around Sweden and released 3 singles, all of which are below (my favorite is probably Laika). In 1988 the band broke up, but reunited in 2006. They released a brand new, full-length album in 2009 (which I will post, as they've made all tracks available for free online). Let me tell you, we should be very grateful they did, as it is truly fantastic! Just listen to "Under Noll", "Inte En Hund", and others. The entire album is a brilliant blending of styles and instrumentation, really.

Symbols - Voices (1982)

Really nice and obscure 12" from the US here. Starts a bit down-tempo and brooding with the title track, and picks up the tempo a bit through the b-side, while losing none of the mood. The early 80s really is a bottomless pit of outstanding gems... or so we hope... Enjoy!

Reason To Live - The Gift (1985)

Here we have yet another lone release by a band that should have had the opportunity to give us more. A really nice private release 7" on Reason To Live Records out of Sweden. The title track is instantly pleasing, an upbeat analog synth masterpiece. It almost reminds me of Beborn Beton at times, strangely enough. The b-side doesn't jump out at you, instead more of a downtempo approach, but let it develop and by the end of it I think you'll enjoy it just as much. A true minimal synth gem. Enjoy!

Nice 7" limited to 1,000 copies by the Swedish new wave band Seppuku. You may recognize them from 2004's various artists compilation, Reminiscent, which features the songs "Assignment France" and "Man Utan Moral". This release features two very nice tracks, I think I'm slightly more fond of the b-side, which is listed as "Under Your Controll" on the record sleeve. Enjoy!

Track List:

A - New Illusion
B - Under Your Control

Les Ziglous - Fou D'Amour (1987)

Updated info received: This was not created as a wedding gift as previously stated here and elsewhere. I have been contacted with the following info:
A group of friends wrote and recorded Fou d'Amour in 1987 in the north of France. One of them was a musician with a small music studio. It was an independent production, not assigned to any record label. They were interviewed on local radio about the song and the inspiration. A freelance illustrator friend designed the cover and another friend took the photo of the group (on back cover).
Thanks for the update, Nicola! Enjoy.

Track List:

A - Fou D'Amour
B - Amour Fou
